Interesting pic, thanks Bob.
I'm trying to figure the place and date. The view must be north for it to be painted in Little Ferry.
According to the history of Little Ferry on the town website, there was a ferry running up until 1828. A bridge across the river existed from 1828 to 1940, when it was demolished after the Route 46 bridge was built. That old bridge connected to the extreme SW corner of Ridgefield Park. I don't see a bridge in the painting, so that means the painting pre-dates 1828, or it could mean the painting was done elsewhere along the waterfront, meaning north of the bridge. But I think the only place in Little Ferry with a road paralleling the river, close to the water, is south of the bridge/ferry site. If so, the painting predates 1828.
I think that the ferry spot is shown in the painting, far right side, with the dead tree leaning over the river and a couple of boats. So if this is correct, the dirt road in the picture could be near the bend of what is now Washington Ave, directly across from the mouth of Overpeck Creek.
Maybe some Little Ferry residents or historians will have better information. let's hear from you.
