One of the most interesting persons connected with the
American Revolution was General George Washington’s
second-in-command, Major General Charles Lee.  Born in
England, Lee had been either a soldier or
soldier-of-fortune in Europe before arriving to assist
the Continentals in their quest for liberty.  However,
Lee had a rebellious streak that sometimes worked out
to his disadvantage as with his actions at the Battle
of Monmouth.  He was court-martialed and part of the
trial was held at the Old Paramus Reformed Church.

The RHS is extremely lucky to have in its extensive
library collection the 1797 original printing of the
Anecdotes of the late Charles Lee, Esq. This has been
reprinted as the Memoirs of Major General Lee.  This
wonderful book contains, in addition to Lee’s essays
and originally worded will, correspondence between Lee
and Washington, Benjamin Franklin, John Hancock, and
many others. The RHS is offering this book, consisting
of 446 pages, for $25.00. History lovers, pounce!
