Hermitage History Roundtable, 2007-2008
7:30 PM at the Hermitage

October 24--Glenn Corbett, John Jay College Fire Science Professor.
"New York City's Volunteer Fire Department:  Folk Art and Fires."  In this roundtable discussion, Glenn takes us on a journey to 19th Century New York City, exploring its flamboyant firemen and the famous fires that they
fought.   He describes the firefighters' elaborate equipment and
highlights the landmark blazes that changed the landscape of Manhattan.

November 28--Kevin Wright and Deb Powell, Past-President and President of the Bergen County Historical Society.
“The Bergen County Historical Society's Museum Collection:  Preserving and Interpreting the Material Culture of the Bergen Dutch.”  Learn about our unique Bergen County history and what the Society is doing to preserve it.

January 30--Susan Deeks, Volunteer for Long Pond Iron Works.
“Built on Iron: The Early History of Upper Passaic County.”  From the 1740s through the 1860s, the mining, smelting and forging of iron dominated the economy of the region encompassing today's Ringwood Borough and West Milford Township. Deeks will discuss the extent of this often-overlooked "rural" industry and its significance in understanding the economic and social development of northern New Jersey.

February 27--Barbara Flurchick, Local Historian.
“Spying During the American Revolution:  Scamps, Scallawags, Ladies, Gents, and Truly the Mean-Spirited.”  Spying went on right here in Bergen County—find out more.

March 26—Sarah Morgan, Hermitage Museum Educator.
“If These Walls Could Talk: From Slavery to Freedom at The Hermitage.”
Using the scant available information (runaway notices, documents of sale, tax records, etc.) Morgan will attempt to piece together the story of the African American population (both slave and free) at The Hermitage in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, and to place that story in the context of the larger history of slavery/freedom in Northern New Jersey.

April 30--Bob Davis, Local Historian.
“Oakland Powder Mill Explosion."  Davis, a resident of Powder Mill Lane in Oakland, will place the 1901 Powder Mill explosion in the broader context of late nineteenth century business practices involving monopoly and trust.

May 28--Wendy Erickson, Master Gardener Liaison for the Hermitage.
"The Secret Garden: Uncovering the mysteries of the Hermitage Gardens."
Erickson will present an informative program on the continuing rehabilitation of the Hermitage Gardens. Learn through photographs and illustrations what gardening was like when the Rosencrantz family resided on the property in the Victorian Era. Learn about Aunt Bess’s garden and the herbarium collections.  Learn how you can grow your own Victorian garden!  We will take a tour of the gardens before the presentation.
