Lecture: Saddle River Valley Culture
« on: November 29, 2009, 02:37:54 PM »
The Hermitage History Roundtable will meet Wednesday, December 2, at 7:30 pm in the Education Room (2nd floor) of the John Rosencrantz house at the Hermitage, 335 No. Franklin Turnpike, Ho-Ho-Kus, NJ 07423.  (Please note that there will be no elevator access for this night’s meeting.)

The topic will be "Saddle River Valley Neighbors: 19th-Century Cooperative Culture at the End of an Era."

Nancy Terhune, former vice-President of the Ridgewood Historical Society, will present mid-19th-century community life among the Jersey Dutch using "The 5 B's," a vivid memoir of the era and will discuss what happened to dissipate the persistent Dutchness of the area. The original "5 B's" manuscript, written by Albert Demarest Terhune (1846-1930) and owned by the Ridgewood Historical Society's Schoolhouse Museum, will be on display.

In case you were wondering, the 5 B’s are the raising bee, the husking bee, the quilting bee, the spelling bee, and the wood bee!  Come learn more about this changing culture.
