Historic New Bridge Landing State Park Commission | | | | The Historic New Bridge Landing Park Commission was established in 1995 by New Jersey State law N.J.S.A. 13:15B-1-5 to tie together the stakeholders, (Bergen County Historical Society, Blauvelt Demarest Foundation, Borough of River Edge, Borough of New Milford, Teaneck Township, County of Bergen, and the NJDEP), to act in good faith, for the purpose of coordinating and implementing all federal, State, county, municipal, and private development policies and other activities relating to the historic preservation and recreational use of the property under the commission’s jurisdiction. In 2000 the New Jersey Legislature amended the law to further the powers of the commission, to include the agreement to indemnify and hold harmless a local governmental unit against any claim arising from the use of property leased from that local governmental unit by the Historic New Bridge Landing Park Commission. In 2009 the New Jersey Legislature again amended the law to transfer the administration of the State lands and building from the NJDEP Division of Parks and Forestry to the Historic New Bridge Landing Park Commission. Any State funds appropriated to the Department of Environmental Protection or the Division of Park and Forestry in the department specifically for, or related to the administration of, the Steuben House or the Historic New Bridge Landing State Park shall be reallocated to the Historic New Bridge Landing Park Commission for the purposes of the administration of the Historic New Bridge Landing State Park. This was done not because the system worked, but because it failed. In 2010 the Commission completed and approved its master plan, which was also approved by the DEP Commissioner, as pursuant to N.J.S.A. 13:15B-4(b). Upon this approval, the administration was to be transferred to the Historic New Bridge Landing Park Commission. To date, the NJDEP has refused to comply and transfer the administration pursuant to State law and has unlawfully diverted the funding from the Commission to administer the Steuben House and State lands at New Bridge. Due to this noncompliance, the Steuben House and State lands at New Bridge continue to suffer demolition by neglect at the hands of the NJDEP. The Historic New Bridge Landing Park Commission is dedicated to having this administrative transfer completed so it can fulfill its mission under law to preserve, protect and open to the public this National Treasure and Revolutionary War battleground.
